Measuring Window Decoration: 7 Common Mistakes You Want to Avoid
Made-to-measure window decoration creates a neat finish, better light control and a more beautiful end result. But because the product is made especially for your window, measuring correctly is very important.
Fortunately, measuring does not have to be difficult. Still, small measuring mistakes can sometimes have a big impact on the final result. In this blog, we discuss the most common mistakes when measuring curtains, blinds and other made-to-measure window decoration. This way, you can order with more confidence — or choose professional help in time.
1. Measuring only once
A common mistake is measuring the width and height only once. Windows, walls and frames are not always perfectly straight. Sometimes the top is slightly wider than the bottom, or the left side is slightly higher than the right side.
That is why you should always measure at several points:
- Measure the width at the top, in the middle and at the bottom
- Measure the height on the left, in the middle and on the right
- Write down the measurements carefully
By measuring multiple times, you prevent your window decoration from being too narrow, too wide, too short or too long.
2. Mixing up width and height
It sounds simple, but it happens more often than you think: width and height are accidentally switched. With made-to-measure window decoration, this is an important mistake because the product is produced exactly according to the measurements you provide. Always check carefully which measurement is the width and which one is the height before placing your order.
A useful rule: Width = from left to right. Height = from top to bottom. Not sure? Check your measurements one more time before completing your order.
3. Not choosing between inside mount and outside mount
Before measuring, it is important to decide how you want to install the window decoration. With an inside mount, the window decoration is placed inside the frame or between two walls. This gives a clean and integrated look.
With an outside mount, the window decoration is placed on the wall, ceiling or over the frame. This can be useful if you want more overlap, for example for better blackout effect or more privacy.
This choice directly affects the measurements you need. So first decide on the mounting method, and only then start measuring.
4. Not taking window handles, radiators or windowsills into account
When measuring, people often only look at the window itself. But the area around the window is also important.
Pay attention to things such as:
- Window handles
- Radiators
- Windowsills
- Inward-opening windows
- Distance to walls or furniture
- Ceiling height and mounting position
A blind, roller blind or curtain should not only fit, but also function properly. Always check whether there is enough space for operation, installation and daily use.
5. Measuring an old curtain or blind
Sometimes it seems logical to measure an old curtain or existing blind. However, we usually do not recommend this. An old product may have changed in length or shape due to use, washing or hanging. It is also possible that the old product never fitted perfectly in the first place.
Always measure the window or the desired mounting position itself. This way, you know for sure that your new window decoration will match the actual situation better.
6. Not checking whether everything is straight
Not every ceiling, frame or wall surface is completely straight. Especially in older homes, small differences can occur. If you do not check this, the window decoration may look crooked after installation, even if the product itself was made correctly.
Check whether the mounting area is straight and whether there are any height differences. For curtains, for example, it can be important to measure from the ceiling to the floor at several points. This helps prevent surprises during installation.
7. Ordering while you are unsure about the measurements
The biggest mistake may be placing an order while you are not completely sure about your measurements. With made-to-measure products, accurate measurements are essential. Are you unsure about the right measuring method, the mounting style or the space around the window? Then it is better to ask for advice first.
